Quickies: BAFTA Wins for Up
Monday, February 22nd, 2010Chinese rip-off of Pixar’s Presto
Monday, November 16th, 2009
Cartoon Brew have an interesting article up at the moment. Whilst looking for a video of Pixar’s short film “Presto”, a reader came across a Chinese animation which is scene-for-scene the same as the Pixar original (although some parts are in a different order).
As the Cartoon Brew reader notes:
It’s the exact same story, timing and sound as Presto, except it’s about 100 times worse because the animation is so bad. The gags don’t come across, you don’t feel as much for the characters….it just doesn’t work.
You can see the Chinese version of Presto by clicking Continue, or you can see it side-by-side with the original Pixar version by clicking here.

Luxo sues Disney over Pixar icon
Sunday, September 6th, 2009Luxo Jr. has been Pixar’s icon for over 20 years now, but it seems that the Norwegian company that shares the name doesn’t like how Disney-Pixar are using their name.
Luxo filed a lawsuit in the New York Federal Court on Friday accusing Disney and Pixar of infringing their copyright by selling a limited edition Luxo Jr. lamp as a collector’s item with the Blu-Ray version of Disney-Pixar’s film “Up”.
Also cited in the lawsuit is the six-foot animatronic version of Luxo Jr. that was recently installed at Disney’s Hollywood Studios at the Walt Disney World Resort in Florida.
A Disney representative told the LA Times that the company had not yet seen the complaint and couldn’t comment as yet.

Deacon on Disney – Quality is Jobs One
Wednesday, May 20th, 2009Ford used to have a slogan, that quality was job one. In this case Disney doesn’t need to study assembly lines or cars, but to take a page from the company they recently bought from Steve Jobs, Pixar. Pixar just released its 10th film UP, to critical acclaim. That makes Pixar 10 for 10. In a day an age where studios release huge noisy over effect laden films in hopes to make a profit, Pixar has kept its focus on making exceptional films, based on a well written story with great characters. These films in return do well at the box office. John Lasseter, chief creative officer of Pixar, puts Pixar’s vision in focus, “Quality is the best business plan.” That plan is doing quite well.
Disney originally had that plan. When Walt ran the studios and the parks his focus was on the experience, not the end result of a profit. One of Walt’s quotes was: “Disneyland is a work of love. We didn’t go into Disneyland just with the idea of making money.“. Sure Disneyland made money, but it made it because the quality of the product was far superior. The Disney name is synonymous with a quality family experience that can’t be found anywhere else. Where did Disney lose that goal? Click to continue »
