Wednesday, May 20th, 2009Ford used to have a slogan, that quality was job one. In this case Disney doesn’t need to study assembly lines or cars, but to take a page from the company they recently bought from Steve Jobs, Pixar. Pixar just released its 10th film UP, to critical acclaim. That makes Pixar 10 for 10. In a day an age where studios release huge noisy over effect laden films in hopes to make a profit, Pixar has kept its focus on making exceptional films, based on a well written story with great characters. These films in return do well at the box office. John Lasseter, chief creative officer of Pixar, puts Pixar’s vision in focus, “Quality is the best business plan.” That plan is doing quite well.
Disney originally had that plan. When Walt ran the studios and the parks his focus was on the experience, not the end result of a profit. One of Walt’s quotes was: “Disneyland is a work of love. We didn’t go into Disneyland just with the idea of making money.“. Sure Disneyland made money, but it made it because the quality of the product was far superior. The Disney name is synonymous with a quality family experience that can’t be found anywhere else. Where did Disney lose that goal? Click to continue »
